What MetaMask actually is
MetaMask is a self-custody browser-extension wallet for Ethereum and every EVM-compatible chain — Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Polygon and hundreds more. Your keys live in the extension, encrypted locally, and you sign transactions from your browser. It is the default way most people touch Ethereum.
The uncomfortable truth: being the default makes it the target. Most crypto theft involving MetaMask is not a break-in of the wallet itself — it is a phishing site that looks exactly like MetaMask, or a drainer contract that asks for an approval you should never give.

Security: the honest picture
The wallet is open source and has been audited repeatedly. Keys are encrypted on-device with your password. That part is sound.
The weaknesses are structural. There is no passphrase option — just the 12-word recovery phrase, so one leaked phrase is the whole wallet. The extension is a hot wallet: anything that can read your browser (malware, a malicious extension, a lookalike site) can read your keys. And MetaMask shows you approval requests without the risk previews that newer wallets like Rabby provide.

MetaMask is fast, stable and familiar — the extension has been the Ethereum default for years, and most dApps assume you have it. The mobile app added a portfolio view and swap aggregator, closing the gap with newer wallets.
The honest complaints: the interface shows its age, approval UX is basic, and the swap feature defaults to MetaMask’s own aggregator (convenient, not always cheapest). None of these matter if you use MetaMask as the interface and a hardware wallet as the vault.
