Why one page covers all ERC-20 tokens
SHIB, PEPE, RNDR, ENA, MKR — all of these are ERC-20 tokens on the same Ethereum network. Their wallet requirements are identical, which is why we deliberately do not write a separate page per token: the recommendation would be the same text with a different ticker. Custody explained
All wallets here are self-custody. Bitvavo and Finst are custodial exchanges for buying ETH and listed ERC-20 tokens — not wallets. Buying on an exchange is fine; storing what you hold is a wallet decision.

Approvals: the ERC-20-specific attack surface
ERC-20 tokens have one security feature that Bitcoin and Solana users never deal with: approvals. When you interact with a DeFi app, you authorize it to move a token on your behalf. The attack:
- A phishing site asks you to “connect wallet” and approve a token — often for an unlimited amount.
- You sign the approval thinking it is a login.
- The site drains your token balance over time — no further signatures needed.
The defenses:
- Approve limited amounts — protocols usually offer a “custom amount” option; use it.
- Revoke unused approvals — Rabby has a built-in revoke tool; revoke anything you no longer use.
- Hardware sign everything meaningful — the device shows what you’re approving, and a fake site cannot hide it.
- Never approve “all tokens” — no legitimate login flow asks for that.
Gas: the practical cost of moving tokens
Every ERC-20 transfer pays Ethereum gas — often €1–3 at normal congestion, several euros during spikes. Three habits keep that cost sane:
- Batch withdrawals — moving 10 tokens in 10 transactions costs 10 gas fees; consolidating costs one.
- Watch the fee estimate — both exchanges show the current network fee before confirming; if it looks high, wait an hour.
- Use L2s for activity — if you interact with DeFi frequently, moving to an L2 (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) is cheaper — but the exchange withdrawal must still match the destination network.

No. Every ERC-20 token (SHIB, PEPE, RNDR, ENA, MKR and thousands more) lives on Ethereum and works in any Ethereum wallet. You need to add the token's contract address to see it — or use a wallet with an integrated token list.
What is an ERC-20 approval and why is it risky?
An approval lets a dApp spend a specific amount of your token. Scammers trick users into signing approvals for unlimited amounts, then drain the wallet. Revoke unused approvals and use wallets that preview what you are signing.
Are hardware wallets safer for ERC-20 tokens?
Yes. Ledger and Trezor keep your keys offline. Tokens still live on-chain; the device signs transactions you confirm on its screen. This stops most remote-drainer attacks.
