Best Internet Computer (ICP) wallet in 2026

ICP is the network that does not use a seed phrase by default: Internet Identity is anchored to passkeys on your devices. That changes how you back up. These are the verified options, August 2026.

Our verdict

Internet Identity is the reference ICP wallet — but it is passkey-based, so your backup strategy is registering recovery phrases and extra devices, not guarding a seed. Plug is the best choice for users who want a familiar seed-phrase wallet on ICP. Oisy is the ICP-native wallet for ck-tokens. For cold storage, Ledger supports ICP via its app. The single most important ICP-specific fact: if you lose all devices and all recovery methods, the identity is gone.

Best overallInternet Identity — The official ICP authentication model, passkey-based and deeply integrated with the network.
Best mobileOisy Wallet — Mobile-first web wallet for ICP, ckBTC and ckETH, built on Internet Identity — nothing to install, works in any mobile browser.
Best hardwareLedger — Ledger supports ICP through the Internet Computer app; pair with a third-party interface.
Best specialised optionPlug — The familiar seed-phrase wallet for ICP users who prefer a traditional backup model.

Internet Computer wallets at a glance

Why ICP changes your backup habits

ICP is the network where the usual advice — ‘write down your seed phrase’ — only applies if you use Plug. The standard path, Internet Identity, works differently: your identity is anchored to passkeys on devices you control. You prove who you are with the device, not with a phrase.

That is more convenient and removes the phrase-theft risk, but it moves the responsibility: your backup is the set of recovery methods you register (a recovery phrase per device, or an extra security key). Losing every device and every recovery method means losing the identity. The wallets that handle this well make recovery setup prominent — treat that step as mandatory, not optional.

Custody explained

All options here are self-custody: you control the keys (or the passkey anchors). Holding ICP on Bitvavo or Finst is custodial — they hold it for you. Buy and sell on the exchange; move what you keep into your own wallet or identity.

Backup & recovery, ICP-style

Whichever you use, do a dry run: set up recovery, then prove you can restore from it before depositing real ICP.

Setup in practice

  1. Go to identity.ic0.app and create an Internet Identity with a passkey.
  2. Add a recovery phrase (store it offline) and a second device if possible.
  3. If you prefer a seed phrase, install Plug instead and back it up.
  4. Optionally connect a Ledger for cold storage.
  5. Buy ICP on the exchange, then withdraw a small test amount first.

Where to buy ICP

Both major Dutch exchanges list Internet Computer. Bitvavo and Finst offer ICP trading with free SEPA/iDEAL deposits, MiCA authorisation (AFM) and withdrawals to external wallets. See our dedicated ICP buying guide.

Withdrawing ICP to self-custody

Withdraw ICP to your principal or Ledger-managed address on the Internet Computer network. Bitvavo charges only the current network fee; Finst adds a €2.50 baseline per crypto withdrawal.

How to choose: five questions

  1. Passkey or phrase? Internet Identity for the passkey model; Plug for a familiar seed-phrase wallet.
  2. ck-tokens? Oisy is the ICP-native wallet for ckBTC and ckETH.
  3. Hardware planned? Ledger supports ICP via its app; pair it with Plug or the web wallet.
  4. Recovery strategy? Internet Identity depends on registered recovery methods and devices — plan this at creation.
  5. Mobile? Oisy works in any mobile browser; Plug is desktop/browser-first.

Internet Identity — the reference ICP account

Best for: users who embrace the passkey model. Price: free (web).

Internet Identity is the official ICP authentication system: your account is anchored to passkeys (biometrics/security keys), not a seed phrase. That is more convenient day to day — but backup depends on the recovery methods and extra devices you register at setup. Lose all devices and recovery methods and the identity is gone.

Pros: official; seamless with ICP dApps; no phrase to leak. Cons: backup is passkey-based; set it up correctly or lose access.

Who it’s for: users who will register recovery properly and want the native ICP experience.

Plug — the seed-phrase option

Best for: users who want a familiar backup model. Price: free (browser).

Plug is the ICP wallet with a classic 12-word BIP39 phrase (plus passphrase) and Ledger support — the most conventional way to hold ICP.

Pros: standard phrase backup; passphrase; Ledger pairing. Cons: smaller ecosystem footprint than Internet Identity.

Who it’s for: users who prefer a seed phrase they understand over the passkey model.

Oisy — the ck-token wallet

Best for: ICP + ckBTC/ckETH users. Price: free (web/mobile).

Oisy is built on Internet Identity and handles ICP, ckBTC and ckETH natively — nothing to install, works in any browser. Same passkey-based backup rules as Internet Identity.

Pros: ck-token support; no install; mobile-friendly. Cons: passkey backup model; ICP-focused.

Who it’s for: users active in the ICP DeFi/ck-token ecosystem.

Ledger — cold storage for ICP

Best for: long-term savings. Price: from ~€59–79.

Ledger’s ICP app keeps keys offline with the standard 24-word phrase plus optional passphrase. Pair with Plug or the ICP web wallet for the interface.

Pros: native ICP; keys offline; passphrase. Cons: closed-source firmware.

Who it’s for: anyone holding meaningful ICP.

Principal vs account, one more time

ICP introduces two terms that confuse most new holders:

When you withdraw ICP from an exchange:

The rule is the same as everywhere else: use the exact destination your own wallet displays, and send a small test amount first.

ck-tokens and the ICP ecosystem, briefly

ICP’s ecosystem includes chain-key tokens (ckBTC, ckETH) — Bitcoin and Ethereum held natively on the Internet Computer, redeemable 1:1. Oisy handles these natively, which makes it the wallet of choice for users active in that ecosystem.

For a plain ICP holder, the summary is simple: ICP is a platform token for a decentralized “internet computer” — the wallet story is passkey-or-phrase, and the backup discipline is the whole game.

Where to buy ICP

Exchanges are not wallets

Bitvavo and Finst are custodial exchanges: they hold your coins on your behalf. Buying and selling is their purpose; the coins remain under the exchange's control until withdrawn. An exchange account and a wallet are different products — this site never ranks an exchange as a 'wallet'.

Frequently asked questions

Does ICP have a seed phrase?

Not by default. The standard ICP wallet, Internet Identity, is passkey-based: it is anchored to authenticators on your devices (Touch ID, Windows Hello, security keys). You create recovery methods — recovery phrases or extra devices — during setup. Plug, by contrast, issues a traditional 12-word seed phrase.

What happens if I lose my device with Internet Identity?

If you registered a recovery method, you can use it to regain access. If you lost all devices and never set up a recovery method, the identity and its ICP are unrecoverable — this is the trade-off of the no-seed-phrase model, so set up recovery during creation.

Can I use MetaMask for ICP?

No. ICP is not EVM-compatible. Use Internet Identity, Plug or Oisy.

Which hardware wallets support ICP?

Ledger supports ICP via the Internet Computer app in Ledger Live, paired with third-party interfaces. Trezor does not support ICP.

Where can I buy ICP in Europe?

Both Bitvavo and Finst list ICP with free SEPA/iDEAL deposits and MiCA authorisation (AFM). Withdraw to your own wallet after buying.
